Advice: The special rates we offer you are negotiated one year in advance to enable an early booking. There might be the possibility that some hotels will offer better rates than the rates above. This could occur because of returned capacities or unsold rooms and cannot be influenced by us. Quantity buyers such as airlines, travel agencies or online companies probably have good rates as well, so please compare the prices.
Shops, offices and banks are closed on Sundays. Most banks are closed on Saturday.
The weather in September is generally nice with temperatures ranging from 12 – 21 degree Celsius, evenings may be cooler and of course occasional rain showers have to be expected. For weather forecast see www.dwd.com (German weather service).
The local currency for Germany is the Euro. Other major currencies are generally not accepted in shops or restaurants, but exchanging money is very simple at hotels or banks. There are multiple bank machines (ATMs) open 24 hours a day throughout the city that accept all major international bankcards. Major credit cards are widely accepted, but please always check beforehand.
The tap water in Germany is clean and safe to drink.
In case of emergency call 110 for police, and 112 for fire brigade or ambulance.
The EBJIS 2010 is a “No-smoking-Conference”.
As of 2007, the state of Baden-Württemberg now operates a no smoking policy in all enclosed public places, including pubs, restaurants and other public buildings. Some restaurants and bars may, depending on size, be declared either as “smoking” or “no-smoking” locations or have separate areas.
In restaurants, it is common to tip around 10% of the bill. With other services, from hotel porters to hairdressers, a small gratuity is commonplace, although you are under no obligation to pay. The same applies to taxi drivers.
Heidelberg is small enough to walk to and from most restaurants, sightseeing destinations and hotels. In addition, taxis and buses run throughout the city and region. Detailed advice on bus and train connections can also be obtained at the customer service center of the Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH (RNV) at Bismarck Square or the main railway station.
